A rolling tremor passes through the land of Uton signaling the return of long absent magic as well as an ancient evil. I liked the story line about humans and "delvers" living together. When a threat appears which could wipe them out they find there are 3 other races involved - dwarves, algors and elves.The main character, Ryson Acumen, is a delver. He is an explorer with a highly developed sense of curiosity along with smelling, sight and speedy movement. Even after reading the whole book I still don't have a clear picture of what he looks like although a human female is his love so I would guess very close to human.
This would have been a great book except for some minor items like spelling and word usage that detract from the story. Mostly the errors can be ignored but once in a while they can confuse.
The major flaw was too much introspection. In more than a couple of places the characters go back and forth, and back, and forth and back forth, just beating the subject to death. Then there are the times that every single thought is expressed. Gets one to wondering if this is just filler to make the book longer.
Although I found the story line to be unique enough and the main character Ryson the delver delightful I would have to give this book a rating of 3 stars.
If you would like to read a unique story with some familiar faces and new ones included, and don't mind the slow spots, the grammer and spelling errors, then you should get this book.

I bought this for my because of the price. Finally got around to reading it and it didn't start out with a bang for me. It was as if the author wanted us to know every single nuance of what everyone was thinking and explaining every idea to all the other characters. This got on my never a little bit, and frankly was put off and found myself putting the book down a lot. Then as I kept with it, the story got a little better as the action kicked in, as when Ryson found himself battling a corpse, then I started getting more interested. By the time I reached the midway part of the book, I found myself reading for longer periods of time. The story was slow to get started but after that, flowed nicely. The author's character development was enough to start with and kept going as the story moved along.
I really think this should have cost more in comparison to the entertainment value. I have downloaded the other 3 in the series and hope their takeoff is a little faster, but not worried as they will definitely be worth the money spent.
I love these books. Yes, they can be a bit too pat at times, the characters pretty predictable, but still... delvers, shags, cliff behemoths, river rogues, hook hawks, and many many more - you have to give credit for creativity where it's due!! I've read my share of fantasy and never come across HALF the creatures in this series. I particularly enjoy the qualities of the delver!
That is the ONLY reason I'm still reading them. The writing is just atrocious. Then is frequently used for Than. Most compound words are separated he said so any way, she decided to cook some thing, they rose above ground, etc. It drives me insane. There's also a lot of redundancy; the author doesn't seem to have a very large vocabulary (or a thesaurus!!) he remains standing among the remaining guards still, etc. As you see, repeating the word AND re-stating the concept. If he remains there, obviously he's there still, so why add it to the end and make it awkward? Also, many sentences just don't make sense. Either they seem to be missing words, they seem to have extra words, or they seem unfinished.
There are still other grammatical/spelling errors, but this is getting pretty long. As you can see, those things bother me a great deal. Imagine how interesting this world must be for me to continue reading! I'm currently on book 4, and I've marked 158 mistakes at the 23% mark but am still enjoying it!
I have to agree with others in the overall assessment of this book. The general premise and characters are basically interesting. The actual writing is a bit rough. I had trouble getting into the book. And it just didn't really flow for me. Some authors can sweep you along to where you are just there, experiencing the book more than just reading it as an outsider. This was not one of those experiences. As someone else said - Mr. Inlo could use an editor, or at least proofreader. There was one stretch of the book where the errors were close enough together that it really disrupted the flow. ("Jon" became "John" and "passed" was in place of "past" and similar things.) Many of the names also were cumbersome, for me. These things detract from the enjoyment, just like the descriptions of the other races. My brain just didn't have the tools, based on his descriptions, to paint a suitable image of an algor, for example. I like it when each character is "real" enough that I have a voice and a face in my mind as I'm reading. That didn't happen for me. (Maybe my imagination is dulling with age...) And, to echo others, it really did drag at times. I wanted to see how it concluded, but I was losing patience.
I've downloaded the other free installments in the series and will try to follow along, but I'm not sure if I'll make it PAST the second book. I'm also not sure where things will go from here. It wasn't an ending that obviously led to more. But, I'll give it a shot. I've read worse and I'm not sure I could do much better myself, so I'll keep an open mind. It's free. I wouldn't pay more than a dollar for what I've experienced so far, to be sure. Perhaps the author peruses these reviews and will use them as constructive criticism and go back to edit the problems (new editions, maybe?) or at least improve in future works.
